The Bulldog is one of the world's most universally recognized and beloved breeds. He has
long been one of the symbols of Britain. The first description of the Bulldog appeared in 1500, however it was only
in the 1630's that the breed started to look like the present-day Bulldog. Some people call the Bulldog the "English"
Bulldog, perhaps as opposed to the French Bulldog or the American Bulldog, but the official name of this breed is simply "Bulldog."
Those who admire and own Bulldogs are called Bulldoggers. Bulldogs are mastiff-type dogs who were most likely descended
from the Tibetan Mastiff.
It's one of the ironies of history that this noble, gentle breed has a dark past, much of which is tied
up in the cruel "sport" of bullbaiting. Between the 13th and 19th centuries, the horrible sport of bullbaiting
was a spectable that people of all ages and classes enjoyed. The first Bulldogs, however, may have been real working dogs
whose job was to restrain livestock. Bullbaiting was made illegal in England in 1835. The Bulldog breed slowly
began to decline without an official "use." Something magical happened though, the invention of dog shows in the second
half of the 19th century, was all that breeders needed to begin breeding their beloved breed again. However, there was
a problem, they needed to start breeding out the viciousness that was bred into the Bulldog and by the look of today's modern
Bulldog, that they did.

General Appearance
The Bulldog is a medium-sized dog with a smooth coat. His body is heavy and thickset, with wide shoulders
and sturdy legs. His head is massive and is, for Bulldog fanciers, the most important physical feature of the animal.
Even at a glance, the Bulldog should give the impression of stability, strength, and power. He should also have a kind,
resolute, and courageous character. The adult male Bulldog weighs about 50 pounds, the female about 40. The height
is usually between 12 and 14 inches at the shoulder.
Character and Temperment
The Bulldog is kind, peaceful, and courageous. He is a stubborn dog and not for everyone. He
does things at his own pace and enjoys the simpler pleasures in life. The Bulldog is one of the safest and most reliable
dogs around children because of his pretty limitless tolerance and fondness for small ones. This doesn't mean a child
should ever be allowed to tease or abuse a Bulldog of course. The Bulldog is a real family dog and just wants to be
part of the family.
